Sandboarding in Nicaragua began at Cerro Negro Volcano, near León, in the early 2000s. Australian Daryn Webb experimented with different objects to slide down the volcano’s black volcanic ash.
Around 2004, he developed a special board that made it easier and safer to descend the steep slopes. The activity soon became part of organized tourist tours in León.
Today, volcano boarding is one of Nicaragua’s most popular adventure activities and a major attraction at Cerro Negro.
